For local service businesses, the goal was never “website visits.” It was always “phone calls.” AI search often shows your phone number directly in the answer — the user calls without ever visiting your website.

Optimize for this:

  • Google Business Profile — your phone number appears in AI answers
  • Click-to-call everywhere — if someone does visit your site, make calling effortless
  • Call tracking — measure calls separately from website traffic

3. Build direct relationships

If AI is the middleman between you and your customers, own channels where there’s no middleman:

  • Email list — customers who opted in hear from you directly
  • Google reviews — 88% trust reviews as much as personal recommendations
  • Referral program — happy customers send you more customers, no search needed
  • Repeat business — a customer who called once for a drain clearing calls again for a water heater

4. Make your website the BEST answer

AI still needs sources. If your page has the most specific, accurate, well-structured answer to a query, AI will cite you more than competitors.

Not this: “We offer plumbing services in the Austin area. Contact us for more info.”

This: “Emergency drain clearing in Austin TX — $99 flat rate, same-day service, available 24/7 including holidays. Licensed master plumber, 15 years experience, 200+ five-star Google reviews. Areas served: Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville.”

The second version has 10 citable facts. The first has zero.

What NOT to worry about

  • Blocking AI crawlers — this doesn’t bring back clicks. It just makes you invisible to AI AND traditional search. Don’t do it.
  • “AI-proof” gimmicks — there’s no trick. The businesses that win in AI search are the ones with the best, most specific content.
  • Abandoning your website — you still need it. AI reads it. Google ranks it. Customers who DO click need somewhere to land.
